About Us InterCommunity Inc. is a community nonprofit agency providing mental health and addiction services to individuals, families, and communities within the state of Connecticut for over 33 years. The agency is licensed by the Department of Public Health to provide mental health and substance abuse services, and provides comprehensive services to over 1800 people each year. Since 1981 the agency has been contracted with the Department of Mental Health & Addiction Services as the Lead Mental Health Authority for six townships, including East Hartford, Glastonbury, Marlborough, Newington, Rocky Hill and Wethersfield, as well as surrounding towns. The original foundation of InterCommunity was created by three families who gathered together in South Congregational Church in Glastonbury, CT to offer mutual support and exchange information around mental health issues. These families came together under the belief that people living with mental illness should have other options than hospitalization. They felt that services could be developed in the area that would help to increase the overall quality of life for people living with mental illness. This small group of concerned citizens incorporated as a nonprofit organization under the name Glastonbury Mental Health Group in 1977. In 1981, the name was then changed to InterCommunity Mental Health Group to incorporate service delivery to individuals residing in towns other than Glastonbury. In 1981, the agency opened the only psychiatric clinic in Catchment Area 16, called the Mobile Aftercare Clinic. In 1982 this program became a free-standing, licensed outpatient clinic with two sites; one in Wethersfield and the other in Glastonbury. From the time period of 1986-1988, InterCommunity opened a formal Residential Program, Case Management, Supported Employment and a Psychosocial Rehab Program. In 1993 all of these programs and services were brought together in one location, at 281 Main St., in East Hartford, CT. In 1994, the agency received the designation of LMHA (Local Mental Health Authority) from DMHAS; this designation made the agency the primary mental health service provider in the area. In 1995, the agency received funding to begin a Mobile Crisis Service and in 1998 a Co-Occurring Disorders program was developed. In 1999 InterCommunity assumed operations of the state run Community Based Initiative (CBI) residential program, which is currently known as the Silver Glen Program as part of Housing Services. InterCommunity currently operates under the name InterCommunity, Inc., since changing its name in 2009. Recognizing the needs of the community, in 2008, InterCommunity opened two new programs, a Children’s Clinic, and InterConnections, LLC. The Outpatient Psychiatric Children’s Clinic is housed at the same site as InterCommunity, in East Hartford, at 281 Main St., while InterConnections opened its doors, down the road at 893 Main Street, Suite 203 in East Hartford. The mission of the organization is to help people living with mental illness and/or addiction disorders improve their quality of life by providing opportunities for healing and recovery. Please know that InterCommunity can only do this important work with the diligent support of individuals willing to volunteer as Board Directors for the organization. Intercommunity’s Board Directors have a wide range of talents and skills, but all share the strong commitment to the organization’s mission, communities, and clients. InterCommunity asks all Board Directors to view themselves as AMBASSADORS of InterCommunity, Inc. If you are interested in learning more about becoming a member of InterCommunity's Board of Directors, please contact Kimberly L. Beauregard, LCSW President and CEO at 860.291.1340, or kimbeauregard@icmhg.org
InterCommunity is the only agency in its area to hold dual-accreditation, as its services are accredited by both the Joint Commission as well as the Commission on the Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF). This designation places InterCommunity in a league of its own, as it demonstrates the organization’s focus on quality services.
InterCommunity caters to all walks of life, as they accept adults and children with and without insurance. As an organization, InterCommunity is committed to community-based treatment and the importance of prevention and education, all grounded in a strong belief in recovery. In its adult services, InterCommunity uses evidence-based approaches in its outpatient, psycho-social rehabilitation, community support and services for co-occurring disorders. Staff in InterCommunity’s Outpatient Children’s Psychiatric Clinic (OPCC) recognize the unique worth and dignity of each child, believing that children and teens are best served in the context of their living communities (families, friends and neighborhoods). |
